Ignorance is NOT Bliss

This is going to be a long post folks so get comfy! Having your head in the sand like an Ostrich from time to time is actually okay, but if you do it all the time... it's a problem.

It's a problem for you but it also becomes a problem for those around you. Ignorance may be Bliss... but it can also be a disaster...

This is a very difficult subject for me to write about because I am not trying to say that Ignorance is about being unintelligent. Many smart, clever educated people can be completely Ignorant. And I am not writing this to name call. I am writing this because a certain type of Ignorance seems to be increasing in numbers in this country and it's effecting us as a Nation. Maybe it's just that it's getting more media attention in our society... either way.. we have to get a handle on it.

There are too many examples of how bad it is in this country, so I am going to focus on just one a little further on in this post. But for now, what does the dictionary say...

Ignorance:The condition of being ignorant: the lack of knowledge in general, or in relation to a particular subject: the state of being uneducated or uninformed.

But in my mind there are two "levels" of ignorance.

One of them is a choice.

The first is a lack of information available to you. This is the innocent side of ignorance, the side that you can't point fingers and say well you should know better. Well if no one ever explained it, how could you know? This kind of ignorance is acceptable because it's not the fault of the ignorant person.

The second type in my opinion is more like a form of Apathy... it's about not giving a damn even when the facts are right in front of you... and that's the kind of ignorance that does the most damage and the type I take issue with.

Because with that type of ignorance there is always an attitude... there's always some sort of a chip on someones shoulder and a type of unwillingness to learn regardless of the benefits to be gained.

The world has exploded with informational resources... it's everywhere... you can't get away from it unless you actively shut yourself off from it. And as a society... we are completely stressed out from it.

We need to shut down, turn off and tune out... just for our own mental health because it's too much to absorb. Life was simple before the information age hit us full throttle. So I understand and agree with every person who needs to bury their head from time to time. I do it myself.

But when people are actively ignorant because they are self absorbed or callous or arrogant and wear it as a badge of honor... their ignorance effects us all

In some cases ignorance can even be deadly. Ignorance can spread like a sort of virus and an example of this, is the West Virginia town being filmed for the show "Food Revolution" with Jamie Oliver.
If you are not familiar with the program, Jamie Oliver is a British Chef who was horrified with the food British children were being served at school and made it his life mission to bring about change there. And boy did he ever!!! He got an entire country to see the light giving the children there a proper start in leading healthier and longer lives.

Jamie decided to come to America to get the ball rolling here as well since we are so obese as a nation. He selected the town that had the worst health problems in America. He went to the schools there and was again horrified at what they were feeding kids. I was horrified too. One of the scariest parts about the situation there was that the food was actually meeting guidelines for the school district. In effect these school were just ignorantly following the rules.

Go ahead and Bang your head on your desk with me now...

Now the kids are the innocents in all this of course. But the adults.... they should be ashamed. It's ignorance... but it's that active ignorance with attitude that gets me so angry. This is why I went to such lengths to explain what I believe the difference is.

If you are ignorant because the information isn't available to you... you get a free pass...

But if you are ignorant because you choose to shut out information.... then you deserve what you get. Problem solved.... sort of...

If you are ignorant by choice... that's fine. But when you impose your ignorance on children... I am sorry but it's practically a form of abuse and should be punishable somehow.

Ignorance may be Bliss... but not if it's putting your life and the life of those around you in harms way.

This is just one tiny example of ignorance, there are countless others and I will cite others in the future.

The main idea I am trying to express in this post is that what you do and how you live effects others. Ignorance is a problem in this country and it's my hope to simply encourage people to take their head out of the sand more often then not...

The world is big and scary and we all need to hide sometimes, but if you keep your head buried... you're just missing out.

A Celebration of Hope

For many of us, the arrival of Easter means the arrival of a new season of joy – of Easter parades, Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies, and sweet Peeps topping off a family meal. Some may wonder why we merrily celebrate at a time when we’re remembering Christ’s crucifixion on the cross. And there is something to that. Good Friday is, after all, about God who became Man, dying on the cross for our sins. And yet we celebrate Easter Sunday, and we are right to do so.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This one verse sums up the miracle that is the Easter season and helps explain the celebration. Yes, Christ died for us, but in the end Easter isn’t a season of sadness. Ultimately, the story of Christ’s rising from the dead three days after the crucifixion is the story of the triumph of hope over despair.

Hope is one of America’s unique virtues. Hope makes us dream and achieve the seemingly impossible. It’s who we are, and it’s why we’re able to always believe that our best days are yet to come, both for our families and for our country. Easter time reminds us that we have every right to believe that this hope is based on time-tested truths and a solid foundation.On behalf of the Palin family, I wish you all a peaceful and reflective Good Friday and a blessed and happy Easter Sunday.

March Madness battles rage! My family and I join millions of Americans enjoying college basketball’s finest through March Madness. Underdogs always get my vote as we watch intense competition bring out the best in these accomplished teams.

The Final Four is an intense, contested series (kind of like a heated, competitive primary election), so best of luck to all teams, and watch for this principle lived out: the team that wins is the team that wants it more.

To the teams that desire making it this far next year: Gear up! In the battle, set your sights on next season’s targets! From the shot across the bow – the first second’s tip-off – your leaders will be in the enemy’s crosshairs, so you must execute strong defensive tactics. You won’t win only playing defense, so get on offense! The crossfire is intense, so penetrate through enemy territory by bombing through the press, and use your strong weapons – your Big Guns – to drive to the hole. Shoot with accuracy; aim high and remember it takes blood, sweat and tears to win.

Focus on the goal and fight for it. If the gate is closed, go over the fence. If the fence is too high, pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, parachute in. If the other side tries to push back, your attitude should be “go for it.” Get in their faces and argue with them. (Sound familiar?!) Every possession is a battle; you’ll only win the war if you’ve picked your battles wisely. No matter how tough it gets, never retreat, instead RELOAD!

Is this funny? Maybe... but to the people who see her as a leader ... they take this kind of stuff to heart. They take this kind of Cutesy wording and give it a deeper, more serious and scary meaning. It's a call to arms. It's a call to fight. It's saying that aggression is good

To those people on the receiving end of the hatred and aggression you spawn... it's not cute or funny Sara.... but it does show that being flippant and mocking is your best asset.

Violence that is being fueled by your attempt at humor is not funny. And if there were actual word police... you'd be in jail for the rest of your life.

Bill Maher.."There Will Be No Cooperation For the Rest of the Year"...

For those of you who don't know who Bill Maher is or get HBO here is a copy of his segment called New Rule


Please note this is a show on cable and there is lots of cursing and adult content... but it's also really funny....

New Rule.... You Can't Use "There Will Be No Cooperation for the Rest of the Year"... as a threat if there was no cooperation in the first half of the year. Here's a word the president should take out of his teleprompter: bipartisanship. People only care about that in theory, not in practice. The best thing that's happened this year is when President Obama finally realized this and said, "Kiss my black *ss, we're going it alone, George W. Bush style."

Two months ago, conservative Fred Barnes wrote, "The health care bill is dead with not the slightest prospect of resurrection." Well, if it's dead, you just got your ass kicked by a zombie named Nancy Pelosi. Seriously, the last time a Democrat showed balls like that John Edwards' girlfriend was filming it. Make all the botox jokes and she-shops-too-much jokes you want, but this is the biggest political victory a woman has ever achieved in America. Yes, Nancy Pelosi likes nice clothes. So does Sarah Palin. The difference is Nancy Pelosi pays for hers.

But even before the Democrats got to take a single victory lap they were already being warned not to get used to the feeling, and not to get drunk with power. I disagree. All you Democrats: do a shot, and then do another. Get drunk on this feeling of not backing down and doing what you came to Washington to do.

Democrats should not listen to the people who are now saying they shouldn't attempt anything else big for a while because health care was such a bruising battle. Wrong -- because I learned something watching the lying bullies of the Right lose this one: when they're losing, they squeal like a pig. They kept saying things like, the bill was being "shoved down our throats" or the Democrats were "ramming it through." The bill was so big they couldn't take it all at once!

And I realized listening to this rhetoric that it reminded me of something: Tiger Woods' text messages to his mistress that were made public last week, where he said, and I quote, "I want to treat you rough, throw you around, spank and slap you and make you sore. I want to hold you down and choke you while I f*ck that ass that I own. Then I'm going to tell you to shut the f*ck up while I slap your face and pull your hair for making noise." Unquote.

And this, I believe, perfectly represents the attitude Democrats should now have in their dealings with the Republican Party: "Shut the f*ck up while I slap your face for making noise -- now pass a cap-and-trade law, you stupid bitch, and repeat after me: 'global warming is real!'"

The Democrats need to push the rest of their agenda while their boot is on the neck of the greedy, poisonous old reptile. Who cares if a cap-and-trade bill isn't popular, neither was health care. Your poll numbers may have descended a bit, but so did your testicles.

So don't stop: we need to regulate the banks, we need to overhaul immigration, we need to end corporate welfare including at the Pentagon, we need to bring troops home from... everywhere, we need to end the drug war, and we need to put terrorists and other human rights violators on trial in civilian courts, starting with Dick Cheney.

Democrats in America were put on earth to do one thing: drag the ignorant hillbilly half of this country into the next century, which in their case is the 19th -- and by passing health care, the Democrats saved their brand.

A few months ago, Sarah Palin mockingly asked them, "How's that hopey-changey thing working out for ya?"

Great, actually. Thanks for asking. And how's that whole Hooked on Phonics thing working out for you?

Well Said Bill! What is obvious to most people is the fact that for the entire Bush/Cheney Administration... we had so much stuff shoved down our throats on a daily basis that it almost choked us.

We had our civil rights taken away from us, the Constitution was constantly trampled on, we were lied to about Weapons of Mass Destruction just so Haliburton would get a kick ass contract to rebuild what we blew up, we tortured people. Banks and Big companies were allowed to run a muck sending us into a free fall financially that will take a generation to fix, an entire city drowned and died from hunger and thirst while "Brownie" was told what a Good Job he did, but Democrats Shoved Health Care down our throats... ????? Give me a break!!!!

Next thing you know those lousy Democratic Bastards might Solve World Peace because our President knows how to be a Diplomat (you good for nothing Nobel Peace Prize winner!) and find a cure for Cancer and Diabetes with stem cell research and help Save the Planet with alternative fuel ideas, and solve our dependence on oil from other countries and End Childhood Obesity with Michelle's Program for kids to Move... yeah...

If something is being shoved down your throat... just hope it's a Democrat doing it...

Will this plan have flaws? Of Course it will!!! No system is perfect, no system comes without cost.

Health Care Costs are crippling this country and literally killing people who can't pay to get help. That's a Flawed System!!!! Why keep a system that isn't working and is literally bleeding us all dry....

We have to start somewhere.... so Give it a Chance before you decide about something that hasn't even been implemented yet...
